Smoking and health: care vs control

How to talk about a partner’s habit without becoming a supervisor.

Case. One partner worries about the other’s health over smoking; the care sounds like control and provokes resistance.

Model. A good intention (care) in the form of pressure backfires — the system defends itself.

Protocol. Speak of your fear and request, not a ban; support instead of shame; the decision stays with the person.

Lesson. Care is heard when it doesn’t turn into oversight.
