🕊️ Wisdom of traditions

The great traditions and modern psychology agree strikingly on what a marriage rests upon. Here, by topic and in parallel: a word from the Qur'an, a word from the Bible, and a note on what relationship science says about it. No imposition — an anchor for reflection.

Love and tranquility

"And of His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you love and mercy."

Qur'an, Ar-Rum, 30:21

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

Genesis 2:24

Psychology: Psychology agrees: marriage is about secure attachment. When it feels safe to be yourself beside your partner, the relationship can weather almost anything.

Mercy and kindness

"…And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them, perhaps you dislike a thing in which Allah has placed much good."

Qur'an, An-Nisa, 4:19

"Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them."

Colossians 3:19

Psychology: Strong couples keep a warm-to-negative ratio of about 5:1 (Gottman). Kindness in small things is not sentimentality — it quietly holds a marriage for decades.

Patience

"O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."

Qur'an, Al-Baqarah, 2:153

"Love is patient, love is kind… it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

1 Corinthians 13:4–7

Psychology: Almost every couple goes through crises and a decline of feelings. Patience here is not "enduring the bad" but not running at the hard stage and letting love mature.

Forgiveness

"Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?"

Qur'an, An-Nur, 24:22

"…Bearing with one another and forgiving each other… as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

Colossians 3:13

Psychology: The ability to release grievances rather than store them is one of the strongest predictors of a lasting marriage. The unforgiven piles up and one day bursts out.

Faithfulness

"And do not approach unlawful intimacy. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and an evil way."

Qur'an, Al-Isra, 17:32

"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled."

Hebrews 13:4

Psychology: Faithfulness is not only about the body but about where your attention and heart go. Guarding the boundaries of the union protects the trust everything rests on.

The strength of the bond

Marriage is called a "solemn covenant" (mithaq): "…and they have taken from you a solemn covenant."

Qur'an, An-Nisa, 4:21

"What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

Matthew 19:6

Psychology: When marriage is seen as a covenant, not "while it's good", a couple faces hardship differently: not "should we leave" but "how do we repair". That changes everything.

Counsel and respect

The believers are described as those "whose affairs are decided by mutual consultation among them".

Qur'an, Ash-Shura, 42:38

"…Let the wife deeply respect her husband," and let the husband love his wife as himself.

Ephesians 5:33

Psychology: A healthy couple decides together and keeps mutual respect even in conflict. Contempt destroys a marriage fastest — respect protects it.

Qur'an meanings are given for reflection; when studying, refer to the primary sources and the spiritual guides of your own faith. The project respects the traditional religions and does not replace them.
