Disrespect and devaluation
How sarcasm, mockery and “jokes” about a partner quietly wreck a marriage.
The problem
One partner devalues the other: sarcasm, eye-rolling, “jokes” about looks or intellect.
How we see it
Contempt is the strongest destroyer of a marriage: it says “you’re beneath me”. It’s an attack on dignity, not a dispute on the merits.
What to do
- Notice the pattern: sarcasm and mockery write off more from the emotional bank than it seems.
- Replace contempt with respect and gratitude — deliberately notice the good.
- Speak of the problem without demeaning the person.
- Restore the home’s safety of being oneself beside the partner.
✗ Чего НЕ делать
- Don’t cover devaluation with “it’s just a joke”.
- Don’t look down on the partner in conflict.
- Don’t store contempt instead of talking about dissatisfaction.
Support: you can argue about actions, not look down on the person. See The Four Horsemen.
